5 of the Best Cities for a Winter Break
From wrapping up warm and strolling through snow-dusted streets, to taking refuge from the chill in beautiful museums and exquisite café-bars, there’s nothing quite like travelling to a new city to break up the cold winter months. With less tourists and the benefit of lower, off-season prices winter city breaks allow you to try somewhere new for a fraction of the cost of a summer trip. So, here are Enclothed’s favourite cities to consider visiting this Winter.
With its quaint, winding streets, tall church steeples and scenic views, despite being Switzerland’s largest city, Zurich has managed to hold onto its romantic, ‘chocolate box’ charm.
One of the best ways to see this whimsical city, is from the top of The Uetliberg; Zurich’s own 870 metre mountain. Towering above the rooftops, the mountain offers a breath-taking panoramic view of the city, the lake and the famous Alps, which is particularly magical during the winter months when everything is frosted with snow. For adrenaline junkies, the toboggan run is also open during the winter; offering two miles of downhill fun from Uetliberg to Triemli, and there is also night sledding with flashlights on offer for those who want to take it up a notch.
Whilst the UK’s unpredictable, (and invariably wet) climate means we can often only dream of a white Christmas, snow is almost guaranteed in Sweden’s capital; Stockholm.
Despite the harsh weather, the city’s roads and walkways are always well gritted, so if you’re looking to add a little Scandinavian magic to your city break head to Ekoparken, a 27-square kilometre park that is often packed full of city dwellers spending a chilly Saturday afternoon skating on the canals – keep a close eye out and you might even spot some mother’s skating along pushing prams in front of them.
Round up a day of outdoor fun with a warm glass of mulled wine or hot chocolate at one of the many Christmas markets around the city.
The Dutch word ‘gezellig’ doesn’t have an exact translation in English, but it’s a combination of ‘relaxing’, ‘lovely’ and ‘pleasant’ – which perfectly sums up the city of Amsterdam during the winter months.
From the sleepy canals lined with gabled houses, to the eyebrow-raising erotica in the famous Red Light District; Amsterdam is a diverse and thrilling place to visit. Take in the sights and sounds of this bustling city at one of the many coffeeshops, or enjoy a spritely winter stroll through the winding walkways to discover new nooks and crannies to explore.
New York, America
Some cities really do come alive during the winter months, and New York is one of them. As the famous the setting for so many Christmas films, including ‘Home Alone 2’ and Will Ferrell’s ‘Elf’ there’s something truly magical about the Big Apple at this time of year.
From iconic backdrops like the Rockefeller Centre Christmas Tree, to the many holiday markets there’s nowhere most festive than the city that never sleeps. But if the thought of dealing with crowds and tourists makes you cringe, you can always opt for something low-key, like grabbing a hot toddy at one of the many festively-decorated bars across the city.
With its lovable craic, vibrant music scene and rich cultural heritage, Dublin is buzzing with life over the winter months. Take a moonlit walk along the River Liffey, or escape the cold in Dublin’s cultural quarter; Temple bar, for a pint of Guinness or a bite to eat.
If you’re lucky enough to visit over the Christmas period, head to Grafton Street on Christmas Eve to see most unique of Dublin’s festive traditions; watching celebrities busking for charity. Though it’s never certain who might appear, previous years have featured Sinead O’Connor, Bono and Hozier – the best thing is, it’s completely free (apart from donations).
